After getting a new DSLR in the summer, blogging photography has become a crucial part of my online presence. Although I have much to learn and do, I feel more confident about the visual aspect of my blog now than ever before. Here are 10 tips that I used to improve the photography on my blog, plus some snowy photos from our winter fantasy.
1. Go Outside
The secret to taking great photos is good lighting. It’s easier to get the perfect shot if you have good lighting. This will also make your photoshoots more exciting. We love to take a drive and find cool places around our neighbourhood. This is something we do on weekends when we have some time to spare in the afternoon.
2. Shoot On Manual
You may be tempted to just set your camera on automatic settings, but you will only get the best results by spending time and learning your settings. You should also balance the depth of field and crispness. Also, you should aim for a higher shutter speed to avoid your photos becoming blurry and shaken. In the future, I will expand on the settings, but right now, Google is your friend.
3. Practice
Take as many photos as you can! Try out different settings to see what you like. You will get there. You’ll get there. I’m still a learner!
4. Shoot in RAW
I feel safer when I shoot in raw format. Raw images let me improve my pictures even if they don’t turn out the way I wanted.
5. Adobe Plan Sign up
Adobe now offers monthly payment plans for its Photography plan. You no longer have to pay hundreds of dollars for Photoshop & Lightroom to begin learning. You can also try it for 30 days free! Lightroom is my favourite for colour/exposure editing, and Photoshop only comes into play when I have to make major edits. Photoshop is where I create all my graphics, so having both is definitely worth it!
6. Use VSCO
VSCO filters are great for a quick colour edit. Each package includes a variety of presets that you can apply to your photos. You can adjust them all to make your pictures more personal.
7. Don’t over edit
You should also avoid using unnatural shades and overexposing your images. Avoid adding unnatural colours & overexposing your images. Less is more.
8. Invest
You can get amazing images with your smartphone if you use the right settings and lighting. However, I can see the difference between my compact camera photography and full-frame DSLR. Canon 6D was the best choice for me because it was affordable and had everything I needed. Definitely consider investing in your camera equipment. Remember, Christmas is right around the corner!
9. Do Not Force Yourself
I usually change my schedule if I don’t want to take pictures on that particular day. All of us have bad hair days, rainy days and awesome mood days. It’s fine! Next time, take a few photos in advance.
10. Catch Your True Moments
Don’t try to copy your favourite bloggers; just be yourself. Be yourself, and don’t copy other bloggers. I find that photography is a very personal aspect of blogs & I enjoy seeing how we all perceive our day. Be original and let your readers in on your story. I’m sure you can see the true emotions behind each great photograph.
I hope you enjoy this post!
